All About the Culture and Heritage of Lewes

Lewes has a diverse, rich cultural heritage and keeps its culture alive all the time. Lewes Bonfire celebration is the biggest in East Sussex in England. Lewes has once been the home of Virginia Woolf, and it is a favourite countryside retreat for the Bloomsbury set. Lewes is also the home of many contemporary artists and traditional craft making people which are showcased in the museums and gallery across the districts of Lewes. Lewes is famous for its strong opera heritage.

Opera and Musical Culture in Lewes

Four miles from Lewes is the Glyndebourne opera house, founded in 1934. This place attracts audiences for its summer festival and hosts many international talents. The Lewes Operatic society founded in 1911 and the New Sussex Opera and based in this location. The Nicholas Yonge Society, The Musicians of all saints, The Lewes chamber music festival, The Lewes concert orchestra, The Lewes Glynde and Beddingham Brass Band are the some of the top classical music series in the country. Some of the amateur and developing choir are the Everyman ensemble, Pro Musica Chamber Choir, Lewes Vox and the East Sussex community Choir.

Museum and Art Gallery

The Barbican House Museum at Lewes Castle is the favourite place to view the Lewes Town model and the Sussex archaeology four galleries. The history of Lewes can be found in Anne of Cleve House. Other independent art galleries in the town are Martyr's gallery, St. Annes Gallery, Town Hall and Pelham House Hotel. The Reeves studio is the oldest photographic studio operating since 1855.


The Lewes Depot opened in May 2017 is a recent new independent three-screen cinema. The Lewes Film Club produces many favourite short movies, and the Film of All Saints shows films based on a former church called as All Saints centre.

Literacy, Dance, Clubs and Pubs

There are Lewes Dance club, East Sussex dance and ballet groups. The Union Music Store in Lewes is the centre for modern folk, country and Americana. Since 2010, the monthly comedy club happens at the Con Club. Lewes Live is a local music festival in summer. Love Supreme festival was founded in 2013 and hosts a Jazz music festival. The Lewes Literary Society was founded in 1948. Lewes has a strong foundation on pub games like Toad in the hole game, Dwyle Flunking and The World Pea throwing competition.
